February Blog Post Assignment: TRUE GRIT
In the late 1980s a movement emerged know as the "Self-Esteem" movement. The idea came from a Californian politician tasked to promote high self-esteem to combat social ills. The idea was that treating people with unconditional positivity would foster their ability to thrive. This movement came into the classrooms by discouraging from issuing punishments, participation trophies, grade inflations, and cocooning them from everyday consequences. An idea with having nothing but the best intentions, but what was not fostered or learned in the process was GRIT. Carolyn Adams Miller, an author on the topic from Bethesda, Maryland, said, "this is not a gritty generation. They become overwhelmed and stressed easily because they have been protected from failure." (1) Like Miller, psychologists now assert that grit, not a positive self-concept, is the best predictor of future success and overall happiness. So.... what, e...
