February Blog Post Assignment: TRUE GRIT
Carolyn Adams Miller, an author on the topic from Bethesda, Maryland, said, "this is not a gritty generation. They become overwhelmed and stressed easily because they have been protected from failure." (1) Like Miller, psychologists now assert that grit, not a positive self-concept, is the best predictor of future success and overall happiness.
So.... what, exactly, is grit? According to the dictionary, it is, in this sense, "courage and resolve; strength of character." (2) It is a passion and perseverance in the pursuit of long term goals. It is what determines the survival of the West Point cadet or who makes the cut for the Olympic team; in other words, it sifts out those who can ultimately make it to the finish line of hard goals in life from those who cannot. Miller says that talent can only get you so far. It is really your grit that determines whether or not you make it.
In fact, research has shown that grit is completely unrelated to talent. (3) At times, it is even inversely related! Those who are not blessed with talent discover they must work twice as hard, and with grit, they develop the skills of discipline and perseverance. Grit is contagious. It is inspiring. It CAN be taught and fostered. In a Washington Post article, Miller proposed some steps to cultivate Grit, and they largely relate to our thinking and how we view and approach challenges:
1. When you face a tough problem, don't tell yourself "this is too hard." Instead, ask, "Why not me?"
2. When things get hard and you want to quit, mentally change the channel. Focus on a spiritual phrase, mantra, or image that encourages you on.
3. Build a team around you. Encourage each other. Be sounding boards. Connect positively as you pursue your long term goals through the achievement of smaller goals.
4. Instead of offering empty praise and pity in failure, parents should coax their kids through failure. Point out the lessons and praise the efforts to keep on going through pain and failure.
5. While it is tough for parents to let their kids experience failure, it is actually the most important KEY in developing Grit!
Back in the 1980s, many communities opted to "soften" neighborhood parks so that kids could fall into a pillow of wood chips. This seemed, in many ways, very prudent, but as it turns out, it has made kids "softer" as a result. Creeping grade inflation, allowing kids to take and retake tests that they "bombed," has also shown to erode the development of grit. Lessening expectations and work load has led to struggles to balance activities and time effectively. Alternately, participation in true, competitive sports and auditioning for roles (and experiencing the disappointment of not always getting the role you want) in theater arts has sown to cultivate grit.
This all really seems to put a spotlight on the IB profile attribute of risk-taker. We have learned through hard experience here that playing it safe, and protecting ourselves from failure doesn't seem to net anything but more anxiety and cowardice. But taking risks, watching, and learning from those who never seem to quit, will actually encourage curiosity and lead to one feeling truly "alive."

to listen to the cautionary pleas and warnings of those around her. She learned to fight like the men she ended up ultimately leading. It turns out that her being a woman was not a "weakness" after all; in fact, it made her less likely to be seen as a threat by the enemy! Several of her fellow fighters were quoted as saying that having one woman named Nancy Wake was like having "five additional men" in their ranks!
Kids with Grit are finishers. they are the tortoises in the race that keep on moving towards their own established finish lines. You may trip and fall in life. You may experience heartbreaking defeat and failure. but kids who ultimately succeed are the ones who take risks and feel alive. They are the ones who get back up after a blowing disappointment with a sparkle in their eye, ad that sparkle? That's GRIT!

1. Click on the link to watch a Ted Talk by Angela Lee Duckworth. Listen carefully to all she has to say. Grit: The power of passion and perseverance
2. After the video, take the Grit Test and see how you score: Angela Duckworth Grit Scale
3. Comment below on how you scored, what you have learned, and how you are going to apply it to your life.
4. How do you think the following characters from Purple Hibiscus would have scored and why?
a. Aunty Ifeoma
b. Jaja
c. Papa Eugene
d. Kambili
Don't be afraid to get GRITTY!!
I scored a 3.7 on the scale and I learned that score is higher than 50% of americans. It taught me it doesn't take grit, it's more stubbornness that allows you to finish what you started and grit is what you have when you’ve been abused or set back for continuing on your path yet you still do. I'm going to use this to my advantage to simply power through obstacles and never give up till I reach my goals. Relating back to the book I feel all the characters would have scored relatively high because they all are set in their ways, determined to maintain control or break free from it.
ReplyDeleteI got a 3.1 on the grit test. I learned that I need to focus more on projects and learn how to keep interest in my long term goals. It showed me that I need to be better at focusing. If Papa took the test I think he would get a 4-5. He is very determined in his religion and seems like a man of focus who does not stray from his beliefs.
ReplyDeleteI got a 3.1 on the grit test. I learned that I need to focus more on projects and learn how to keep interest in my long term goals. It showed me that I need to be better at focusing. Aunty Ifeoma seems like she would score around a 4. Knowing that she had a job and was educated shows that she had some determination to go for things. Jaja also seems like his grit is high, around 3.8-4. I say this because he works hard at Aunty Ifeoma’s, and he shows grit when going against Papa and his beliefs. I think Kambili would score a 3.5 because at the beginning of the book there was not much grit in her but at the end she was much more confident. If Papa took the test I think he would get a 4-5. He is very determined in his religion and seems like a man of focus who does not stray from his beliefs.
DeleteI scored a 1.9 out of 5 on the Grit Test. I learned that I only scored higher than about 10% of American adults and that I probably need to try harder in my life. I will apply this score to my life to motivate myself to work harder on things I can accomplish and not give up if things are hard.
ReplyDeletea. Aunty Ifeoma would have probably scored higher around 4 to 5 on the grit scale. I believe she would have scored high because she does not give up easily or succumb to ideas that he does not follow or support. She is a hard worker and can overcome challenges that face her.
b. Jaja would score around the same as Aunty Ifeoma because of the influence she has on him. After all his time in Nsukka with Ifeoma and her family, he developed his own sense of freedom and independence, he is able to oppose his father and live for himself.
c. Papa Eugine would score around a 4 in my opinion. I think that he is content living how he does and is motivated enough to overcome challenges and find interest in different things.
d. Kambili would score around a 4 to 5. I think that after she found a sense of freedom while living with Aunty Ifeoma, she would have though more about herself and what she really wants, not what Eugine expects of her. She is able to overcome hardships and work hard to achieve her goals in life.
I scored a 4.0 on the grit scale, showing that I can go far and do the things I need to in life in order to become successful. I can apply this to my daily life by just going and doing the things needed in life, such as college, getting a job and eventually supporting a family. I think Auntie Ifeoma would have had above a 4.5 on the grit scale and this is due to not only her financial situation but her family situation as well, because despite her father's death a well as the loss of her job she still was able to persevere to take her family to a better living space. I think Jaja would also score high, with at least a 4.0 due to how he was capable of enduring his father's tyrannical reign over the family's compound as well as how he had owned up to his father's murder despite not being the person who did the deed. Kambili had built grit over time but at the very same time I personally could not see her being anywhere near the grit of the previous two characters, so I'd give her a 3.5 - 3.8 at most, because her mental state was quite weak, driven mostly by fear or the thought of punishment. While she did endure the hardships, her mind was always reliant on her father's love and If she did not receive it or had any kind of set back she would have trouble trying again in some cases. Eugene likely had some sort of grit in order to achieve the status and wealth he had amassed for his family but he was very weak when he had any kind of set back involving his control over his family, hence why he needed to abuse his family or manipulate the ones around him in order to achieve his way. I give him a 2.0 tops.
ReplyDeletei scored a 3.90 on the scale and I learned that my score is higher the 60% of American adults who have taken this test. this test taught me that I maintain an interest In most of my assignments and that i get most task done on time and when needed. Most of my interest stay the same over time and rarely change. This will apply to my life because most of the task i do i end up finishing and not losing track of them.
ReplyDeletea. Aunty Ifeoma
I think Aunty Ifeom would of scored high because she seems to have a high sense of information and knows how to get tasks done.
b. Jaja
Jaja would have scored really high because he did his own task and focused on many of the different reasons for his freedom.
c. Papa Eugene
I believe papa would score high due to editing magazines and doing all the task that were assigned to him when he received a task he would get it done.
d. Kambili
I believe Kambili would score around the middle due to her getting things done but aslo getting distracted my many different things and due to her following and trying to help everyone.
I got a 3.9 on the grit quiz. I learned that I am grittier than 60% of people which is right around what I expected. I'm going to try harder to get things done when they should be instead of putting them off is my biggest issue.
ReplyDeleteI would say Aunty Ifeoma would have like a 4 because she was faced with many issues and she never complained but faced them instead. Jaja would get pretty close to a perfect score of 5. Jaja throughout was really the one to stand up against the biggest force in the story no matter the circumstance. Papa Eugene would probably get somewhere form 4-5. His strong leader personality is why I could see him being very gritty. Kambili I don't really think is very gritty in comparison to the other characters, maybe a 3. She never really stands up to anything, mainly hiding or being silent, and just accepting things that come her way.
On my grit score I got a 2.4 out of 5. My score was higher than 10% of American adults. I learned what grit means and how it can be used in real life. Grit means determination, and the ability to persevere through your goals, wants and needs. I feel like in my life I tend to lack a bit of grit and give up easily on tasks and goals. After learning about grit and how it impacts one’s life, I feel like I am going to try to use it more often and try to pursue my goals without giving up.
ReplyDeletea.) Aunty Lfeoma would score high, around a 4 or a 5 in my opinion. Aunty Ifeoma has proved that she does not need a husband or anyone to hold her back or help her through hard times. She is raising her kids on her own and does not find a problem with it.
b.) Kambili I feel like would score very low, around a 1 or 2. This is because she is under Papa’s rules and is not allowed to have her own life. She does not speak up for herself and what she wants.
c.) Jaja I feel like would be a little higher around 3 or 4. I believe this because throughout the novel he is seen slowly breaking away from Papa’s control and learning who he is and wants to be. Jaja knows what he wants and he doesn't want to be controlled and wants to live by his own rules.
d.) Eugene would be fairly high in my opinion because he is very controlling and knows what he wants and how he will do it. He has persevered his whole life to get where he is now and that is why he is very successful and loved by his community.
My score on the Angela Duckworth Grit Scale Test was 4.20. I have learned that I am more disciplined than I thought I was. Lately, I’ve been following through with every goal and plan I have. I’ve been changing my habits and slowly leaving my comfort zone, trying to stay focused on the future life I want. I feel more confident in myself and what I do. I am going to keep my energy up and move forward with my plans. I think grit and discipline are the most important traits a person can possess regarding their will to succeed.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma: I believe Aunty Ifeoma would’ve scored 4.60-5.0 because she is a very Gritty character. We learn about her hardworking personality throughout the book. Aunty Ifeoma shows her Grit by living the life she wanted even though it distanced her from other benefits. She chooses to live freely even though it comes with struggles and issues that she can’t control.
Jaja: I think Jaja would’ve scored 4.0-4.40 because even though at the beginning he is submissive to his dad, after he tasted freedom, he is determined to change his life for the better no matter what. He rebelled against his dad’s strict rules and fought until the end. Jaja is very strong-minded and always stood up for himself and others.
Papa Eugene: Papa Eugene would’ve scored 4.40-4.80 because he never gave up in his teachings of the word of God. Papa was always strict with his rules and expectations, but he was also a very admirable character at times. He had grit and stood up for what he believed even if it made him a hypocrite.
Kambili: In my opinion. Kambili would’ve scored 3.50-3.80 because she has a very sensitive heart. Kambili has grit, but she was still submissive and obedient for far longer than Jaja was. She feared for a long time, which made her a silent and vulnerable character. However, she still stood up for herself in the end and finally found her voice.
I got a 4.30 out of 5 on the grit test and I expected it actually. A lot of my life I show grit whether it's waking up early to go to the gym or maybe straining my whole weekend to be a faster racer. I think being gritty means doing something even though you don't want to or maybe it's a long task. The characters in purple hibiscus are pretty gritty especially kambili and he family cause they endured the abuse from papa.
ReplyDeletea. Aunty Ifeoma
Aunty ifeoma would probably get a 4.50. She shows a lot of grit by always taking care of her children over herself and working so hard yet living in such a small place.
b. Jaja
Jaja get a 4.20 because of how he somewhat fights back against papa and his abusive ways, he also has to endure papas beatings
c. Papa Eugene
Papa gets a 3.00 because he works hard to support his family but he takes his anger out on his family which is not gritty
d. Kambili
Kambili would get a 2.70 because she just stays quiet and doesn't really show that she doesn't like it
I scored a 4.00 on the scale and I learned 70% of Americans. This test showed me I kinda locked in that I stay committed and get tasks done most of the time. it also felt like me since i've had the same interest in for awhile . But the results of the quiz felt like me.
ReplyDeleteA. Aunty ifeomea
she seems like the most gritty purely beacues she always knows what to do and stays committed to her job,her family, and her way of life throughout the novel
B.Jaja
he would've scored high due the he stayed on task and was focused on his freedom
C. Papa eugene
papa would've scored high because he was firmly committed to his beliefs even when it was hard. like fighting for freedom and his punishment for his family, even though it was wrong he would still do his best to do the task
D. kambili
she would be in the middle due to her not being very focused reserved and quiet. we also don't see her finish many tasks.
I scored 3.30 on the grit test, I do often give up things easily if they don't matter; however, with bigger things, I do overcome them. Priorities play a part in grit, especially the personality of a person. One question did stand out to me more than the others, and it was along the lines of ´do you give up hobbies that you were obsessed with, within a short period of time?´ I find myself very engrossed in various gifts (mainly art), and I would not finish the project for weeks because I got bored or made a mistake that I later corrected. However, I find myself constantly giving up on hobbies. My mama always says ¨jack of all trades, master of none, ¨ because once I think I've done enough, I stop. Aunty Ifeoma would score high because her husband died, was willing to start work for her intermediate family, while still having a good family relationship, and still pay for medicine for her father when she could. She perseveres even though the situation isn't ideal. For Jaja, I feel like after his character development. He would score high on grit, especially since he goes against his father and even takes one of his father's beatings willingly. When it comes to Papa Eugene… I would say towards his death, he would score low because he doesn't argue with anyone but taking into consideration he was dying, I think if that wasn't the case he would score high, he was a editor for a newspaper going against the government and that takes a lot for a person to do. Finally, for Kambili, after character development, I think she would score somewhat high but not as high as the rest of the characters. She doesn't stand up for herself since she doesn't still take her father's beatings, but she stays silent. She goes against it differently, but I believe that Aunty Ifeoma and Jaja would score higher on this test than Kambili.
ReplyDeleteScore: 3.6
ReplyDeleteI learned that when it comes to being successful, what matters the most is having a growth mindset, so you can be able to reach your goals because if you solely focus on building your talent and skills you’ll lack in the part that matters the most. Based on what I have learned, I want to keep having a growth mindset and allow myself to grow as a person. So when the time for college comes around I will be able to go in with a good mindset and long term goals I want to achieve.
Purple Hibiscus:
I feel like Aunty Ifeoma would’ve scored a 5.0 because she was someone who always had an open mind and was very vocal about stuff she agreed and disagreed with. I also think that Jaja would originally have a score around 2.5-3.5 due to how he was more reserved and closed at the start of the book. However, I would say late book Jaja would score a 5.0 seeing as he had a big change and became more open minded and became more vocal about his decisions. I feel Papa would score around 3.9-4.7 only because when it comes to Jaja and Kambili he always strives for them to have long term goals and to achieve them. Another big thing was that he heavily stood for the stuff he believed in and his goals. However I also feel like he would score low cause at times he would have a fixed mindset when it came to allowing his kids to grow as people. I feel like early book Kambili would score around a 2.0-3.0 solely because she heavily relied on her father to make decisions for her or even relied on her brother to help influence her decisions. However, I feel like in the late book Kambili she would score around a 4.5-5.0 because she has grown as a person and even began taking her choices into her own hands.
My score was a 3.20. What i learned is that grit means sticking with things even when they’re hard. Success isn’t just about being smart it’s about not giving up. ways can apply it to my life is by thinking of ways to be more determined in school, sports, or life goals.
ReplyDeleteI think Aunty Ifeoma would score closer to a five because She works hard, stays positive, and doesn’t give up even when life is tough. For Jaja, i think he’d score a high 4, he Starts off quiet but becomes brave and makes his own choices, even when it’s risky. For Papa Eugene he is Gritty but in a bad way He sticks to his beliefs no matter what, but it leads to hurting his family. So i’d say it’d be a high for but in a bad way Kambili i think 4.20 At first, she’s shy and scared, but she learns to be strong and speak up for herself.
In her TED Talk on grit, Angela Lee Duckworth emphasizes the value of zeal and tenacity in accomplishing long-term objectives. I scored a 3.60 on the Grit Test, which shows a modest level of grit that can be utilized in one's personal life. I want to establish specific long-term objectives and divide them into doable tasks to sustain motivation and dedication. Throughout "Purple Hibiscus," characters such as Aunty Ifeoma, Jaja, Papa Eugene, and Kambili exhibit fortitude and tenacity. While Jaja expresses his independence and questions his father's authority, Aunty Ifeoma uplifts her children and keeps them hopeful. His authoritarian demeanor and lack of empathy compromise Papa Eugene's objectives. Kambili's potential for grit is demonstrated by her development and perseverance as she manages her situation.
ReplyDeleteAfter I took the test, I got a 3.8 on the grit scale which was higher than 50 percent of american adults in a recent study. I have learned that I am capable of change and can improve if I put effort towards it. I am going to apply this to my life by practicing things I am bad at so that I can improve.
ReplyDeleteI think Aunty Ifeoma would have scored highly on the grit scale because she is working to get an education even in her old age. I think that Jaja would also score highly on the grit scale because they are actively looking for change. I think that Papa Eugene would score lowly on the grit scale because he is stuck in his ways and unwilling to grow. Finally, I think that Kambili would score low on the grit scale because she chooses to listen to Papa Eugene instead of fighting for the change she hopes for.
In the TED talk, Angela Lee Duckworth talks about how grit is a combination of passion and perseverance for long-term goals. Talent alone is not the key to success, it is the ability to stick with challenges despite setbacks. Duckworth did studies on students and teachers showing that grit is a more reliable predictor of success than intelligence or talent. She emphasized the importance of having a growth mindset
ReplyDeleteMy score for the grit test was a 3.20, meaning I struggle with sticking to long-term goals because I get bored or distracted easily. What I've learned is that I am passionate about my goals but struggle with consistency. For the future, I am going to find something that I love and make one big goal but break the goal up so I can reach more goals and not get bored of just one big goal in the future.
For the character's grit tests, I feel Aunty Ifeoma would score pretty high because she is always determined and passionate about her work and never gives up when there are challenges. Jaja might get a somewhat high score because he starts quiet and then gets more determined and strong as he grows, especially when he stands up to his father. Eugene might get a score somewhere in the middle because he is very hardworking, but his persistence is about control, not positive goals. And Kambili might get a low score because she's controlled by her father and unsure of herself but she slowly grows and learns to speak up for herself.
The score I ended up getting was a 3.10 on the grit test, this is most likely because while I can be determined I can be lazy which leads to a lack of grit. Something Ive learned from taking the grit test and watching Angela Duckworth’s TedTalk is that there is more to learning than just being quick and being good at learning, but having grit. If you can persevere and have a passion for something, nothing can stop you as long as you are determined and have grit. Someone who pushes through difficulty is more likely to succeed than someone who gives up after only slight tribulations. I can apply this to my life by not focusing too much on things I may not be good at and try to just push through and not give up. I may not be amazing at school but certain things I accelerate at I can try to work on to be successful.
ReplyDeleteWhen thinking about Purple Hibiscus characters and what their grit scores would be, I think scoring the highest would be Aunty Ifeoma (4-5). I believe this because she has unwavering beliefs and is very self-sufficient when it comes to almost anything in the book. Second would probably be Papa Eugene (4-5), while grit is a good thing it can be misguided. Papa throughout the book has always been a determined individual not easily shaken leading to his high score, it's just not directed well. Third would be Jaja (2.8-3.6), near the beginning of the book Jaja was obedient but as we have read through He has become very independent and very respectful and kind to Kambili and Mama but he still through the book lacks some grit to confront conflict. Lastly, Kambili would score the lowest maybe around 2-3 this isnt because she just lacks the ability to be determined to something, but because she never really acts on anything in the book. She is always falling onto Jaja, Mama, or Aunty Ifeoma to confront things, this does gradually get better later into the book but still not insanely high.
Score: 3.40
ReplyDeleteThis score suggests that while I have a good amount of determination, I might struggle with maintaining through challenges consistently. Getting this score helped me realize that I have some perseverance, but I should focus on improving staying focused in areas where I may get distracted. This applies to my life because since it helped me realize I have to be better, I'm going to set better goals for myself such as when I feel like giving up or losing momentum, I’ll remind myself that I shouldn't give up and keep going.
Aunty Ifeoma = 4.5 because she shows a lot of resilience throughout the novel and how she helps the other characters such as Kambili and Jaja push through from Papa.
Jaja = 4.0 because of how he goes against Papa so he can claim his own identity despite the risks involved which shows his perseverance.
Papa Eugene = 4.7 because he is committed to his strict rules and religious belief and his relentless drive towards a controlled perfect life, no matter the cost, shows huge determination and consistency.
Kambili = 3.8 Throughout the novel, she slowly discovers herself and begins to question what's around her. This transformation shows that her grit is getting higher but I would give her a 3.8 on where the novel left off.
I received a score of 2.29 which is accurate since I often find myself losing interest in a lot of my goals since it's a slow process. Having grit is important because it can help you keep your long-term goals in place. I am going to apply this in my everyday life by taking my long terms slow and easy. I will follow certain tasks and complete them knowing in the future I will be at what I desire. I believe that the following characters like Aunty Ifeoma and Papa Eugune would receive a high score because they never seemed to set back on their goals. However, Aunty Ifeoma moves with positivity and Papa Eugune is hard headed. They carried courage and a voice to guide them to their place. However, Kambili and Jaja would probably have a score higher than four because they found their voice, they're brave, and strong.
ReplyDeleteI scored a 3.50/ 5.00 by now learning this information about myself I know that I am pretty strong when it comes to grittiness but that there is still room for improvement of course. I am applying this to my everyday life from now on by having a stronger growth mindset and believing in myself more. I feel that Aunty Ifeoma would have scored a 4.00 if not more because of how much of a strong personality she has. Jaja would most definitely score a 5.00 because of how much he persevered throughout the novel and didn't let anyone bring him down. Papa Eugene would have scored a 3.00 if not lower because of how closed-minded he is and someone can’t have that much grit if they are not willing to grow as a person. Lastly, I believe that Kambilii would have scored 3.50 the same as me because I feel that like me, it takes her some time to accept change whether it's changes from within herself or around her.
ReplyDeleteI scored a 3.5 on my grit test, which is higher than about 40 percent of American adults. Grit was a common factor in anyone's ability to learn or do something. Factors like IQ, social intelligence, looks, health, and grit were also common factors. Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals and sticking to your future day in and day out. In my life, grit is something that I would use with my knowledge of my job and my health to set those goals to be better at something one day at a time.
ReplyDeleteI think Aunty Ifeoma would have scored between a 4 and a 5 because she always sees the positive and is positive, but also has authority and is very nice and very welcoming. Jaja would score somewhere between a 3.5 to a 4 because, as the book goes on, he branches out more and we see that with him trying new things and welcoming his new environment, and taking that fall for his mom to see his long-term goals. Kambili would have a lower score around a 2 to a 3 because she always relies on someone and never fully thinks for herself. Also, we see in the book that she doesn't fight for herself. Papa would score the highest out of all four because he has the most grit, it may be for the wrong reasons, but in the book, he goes to great lengths to ensure his family follows his authority and their religion having the most determination even though it is wrong for him he is doing all he can.
4.2 /5 higher than 80% of Americans, I learned I need to get less distracted by new ideas and projects as that has been somewhat of an issue, but otherwise I just need to keep chugging along and make sure I don’t burn out along the way.
ReplyDeleteHow do you think the following characters from Purple Hibiscus would have scored and why?
Aunty Ifeoma 4-5 She has pushed through her individual and family adversity and kept going ensuring her long term goal of a safe and secure living environment for her children, going so far as to move to america and pushing as much as she could to get out of the danger, even trying to convince mama to take Jaja and Kambili with her as she could see the unsustainability of the family situation there.
Jaja 3-4 he is constantly pushing to his own freedom and trying to shield Mama and Kambili from whatever is to come next, going so far to even get arrested for mama to stay free.
Papa Eugene Maybe during childhood he may have been somewhat gritty, but when we see him in the novel he violently despises failure of any kind and gives zero encouragement to keep Kambili going through any of her academic failures. 0-1
Kambili 2-3 She pushes through most of the ridiculous expectations laid upon her and keeps going, she endured the entire situation and just kept going regardless of the abuse, even when she was put into the hospital she always kept going forward.
My score was 3.30 which is higher than 30% of adults who took the test. I have learned that I'm pretty gritty. But I'm not that surprised. In my life, I'm going to apply this by getting a job, schooling, getting scholarships, earning money, and having a peaceful quiet life. I think Aunty Ifeoma and papa would score pretty high because they are determined to get their way. In the first half of the book Jaja, Kimbali and Mama would score lower than the average but if they retake the test, they would score much higher after surviving everything they had.
ReplyDeleteI scored a 3.20 on the Grit Test, showing that while I have a fair level of perseverance, I can do better. This test showed me that although I can commit to specific goals, I often find it challenging to maintain dedication over a long time, especially when times are difficult. This helped me realize that I need to practice overcoming problems rather than giving up fast. To be able to prevent feeling stressed out, I plan to use this in my life using little goals that lead to larger ones. The most important part about this is that failing is a necessary part of the process to become better, and shouldnt' be a reason to give up.
ReplyDeleteFor Aunty Ifeoma I believe she would have scored the highest because she is a strong independent person that never gives up throughout the book. She stays true to the beliefs she believes in.
Jaja would also score high because he is a determined, responsible person. Taking the responsibility of his family, while willing to sacrifice himself to protect his mom.
I'm not sure what Papa would score due to his hard discipline and extreme beliefs.
Kambili would score low due to her scarcity and obedience. But eventually grows out of her comfort zone when visiting Aunty Ifeoma.
I scored 2.90, this tells me that I need to finish what I start. I sometimes don’t finish things if it takes too long or if I have setbacks or get bored. I am going to try to do projects that don’t take longer than a couple weeks to complete so I am more likely to complete them and then slowly build my way up to longer projects once I know I will finish them.
ReplyDeleteI believe Aunty Ifeoma would have the highest score of all the characters from Purple Hibiscus, with a score around 4.8. Aunty Ifeoma raised and did whatever she had to to provide for her 3 kids by herself, she created solutions to problems that got in her way and completed what she needed to. Jaja might have scored a 3, he would do a lot to stand up for himself even with how Papa treated him. Jaja didn’t push through, he would go around and set backs and issues that occurred. Papa Eugene would score a 2. He didn’t exactly need or use grit when he could just use abuse and money to get what he needed/wanted. I think at the beginning of the book Kambili would of scored maybe a 3 because she was so used to just doing whatever Papa wanted and she didn’t think through what she wanted so she didn’t have her own motives and drive to push for what SHE wanted. After staying with Aunty Ifeoma though, I think she would have scored higher around a 4.5 because Aunty Ifeoma gave her the freedom to think what she wanted to do so it made Kambili have her own drive to push through what she wanted and let Kambili realize failure was okay.
I scored a 4.09 on my grit test. While watching the video it really made me think about the interesting fact that the people who succeed the most are the ones who have grit. I was actually surprised about educational systems cocooning kids with positive atmospheres, since I think that's how you build a weak generation. I think allowing kids to retest or not have any consequences will ultimately lead kids to lose care and become lazy. I have heard it from a lot of successful people about their experience with Grit, with working hard, with not giving up. This study only proves it more, even if you are very talented, if you don’t put in the work, you won’t succeed. I will definitely remind myself more about grit, forcing myself to embrace challenges, along with reminding myself grit is the only path to success.
ReplyDeleteI think Aunty Ifeoma would definitely score above a 4 because throughout her whole life she has been struggling with poverty yet she perseveres and stays joyful. For example, Aunty Ifeoma won’t allow the university to shut her mouth or she would motivate her kids to be more independent and stand up for themselves. Like the way she would encourage Kambili to stand firm.
I think Jaja would also score above a 4, since throughout his whole life he has been abused by Papa but he didn’t allow that to instill fear in him. Instead Jaja would retaliate way more willingly to even protect his family from Papas abuse which takes perseverance and a lot of strength. I mean he even took blame for the death of Papa, going to prison in order to protect his mother which is dangerous and ruins your whole life.
Thirdly, I think Papa Eugene would score higher than 4.5, since Papa was a very stubborn character, he wouldn’t allow his kids much freedom due to his goal of keeping them safe, but also force them to accept Catholicism. Additionally, Papa would support the standard speaking against the corrupted officials in the government, persevering to bring an end to corruption in Nigeria. Papa was a successful man which takes grit in order to achieve it.
Finally, I think Kambili would score lower than a 2, due to the fact she never stood up for herself or against Papa’s cruelty. In her life she would always be quiet and closed off, she never strived for anything, instead she would allow manipulation from peers, father and others.
This is Max
DeleteOn the Grit test, I scored a 4.09. What I learned is that I have scored higher than 70% of Americans. I also learned that having grit means sticking to things, having self-control, and disciplining yourself even when it's tough. This score isn't a surprise to me as I believe that I often practice grit within my personal life, whether that be with hobbies, school, goals, and even in relationships. Essentially, I persevere to finish my short-term and long-term goals as best as I can. Relating this to Purple Hibiscus, if Aunty Ifeoma were to take this test, she would score a very high grit percentage (such as 4.30). The reason for this is that she persevered through hate from her school and the passing of her father to get her family to a better place (America). Jaja would score a score of 4.00 as he struggles with being brave and going against his father at first but then is courageous and sticks up for himself. Papa Eugene would have a score similar to Aunty Ifeoma. However, his score would only be high as he boldly abuses his family and controls them. Lastly, I think that Kambili will score a 3.90. I believe this because she is quiet and doesn’t have her own opinions or goals for HERSELF; she only has the goals Papa has given her. However, at the end of the book, we see that she is slowly gaining her identity and showing grit by exploring and being free.
ReplyDeleteI scored a 3.40 on the Grit test. Sometimes I do catch myself giving up on things that I just don’t have interest in anymore, but when it comes to my goals and my future I work hard to achieve them. I learned that you don’t have to be smart to be successful, you just have to be consistent with your goals and have a growth mindset. I will continue to work hard to achieve my goals, keep a growth mindset, when I find myself giving up I will remind myself to be positive and continue working hard.
ReplyDeleteA. Aunty Ifeoma would score a 5.0 because she is a hard worker, she keeps a positive mindset and she doesn’t give up when life gives her troubles.
B. Jaja would score around a 4.8 or higher because he always had focus on having freedom, he wouldn’t let Papa control him as much, he stood up from himself when needed.
C. Papa Eugene would score higher but in a bad way because he is abusive and very controlling. But, He sticks to his beliefs and no one can tell him otherwise. He has bad grit.
D. Kambili would score in the middle like a 3.0, because of her very quiet and shy personality. She would have a hard time focusing on things, because of the fear she had for Papa. At the end she did finally find a voice and stood up to Papa.
I scored a 2.70 and learned that determination and grit are important factors in achieving goals. This shows that when people fail, it is not always because they are not smart; it is also because they lack the same grit others have when they strive to reach their goals. This determination to complete goals is why so many people who wouldn't have been believed if they said they were going to be successful to have been successful. I am going to apply this new knowledge to my life through school and furthering my education. I will also use it to enhance my ability to achieve new goals. With this new knowledge, I should be able to understand better how I must complete tasks and stay focused on the task at hand until the end.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma: 4.7
I chose 4.7 because she is a very determined lady and is very strong-willed. She is very independent and does not rely on her family to care for her, even as she struggles.
Jaja: 4.9
I believe that Jaja is a 4.9 because he is very independent and mentally strong. He knows what he is doing and does it knowing that there will be consequences.
Papa Eugene: 4.4
I believe that Papa is strong-willed even if he is wrong in his choices. He doesn't rely on others for support and is laser-focused on his interests (worshiping God).
Kambili: 4.6
I believe that Kambili is a strong-willed person when she needs to be and can take care of herself in the ways needed. Even after what she has had to witness, she continues and tries her best to keep being herself once she has new experiences.
On the grit test, I got a 3.0 which is higher than 20% of American adults in the US. The score I have gotten shows that I am passionate about work, a project, or hobby but soon later get distracted and move away to another project or procrastinate and not be able to do it. I can apply this to my life by trying to have a huge focus and the subject i am working on so that I do not lose hope or interest when working on it so i can properly finish and have fun from the outcome.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma would probably have her grit score on the 4.0 scale since she is really determined and believes in herself throughout the book. Jaja would probably have his grit score on the 3.0 scale since he wouldn't really do anything to papa but would later be independent later into the book and go against papa beliefs. Papa Eugene would probably have his grit score on the 4.0 scale since he is very passionate about his religion that no one should go against it and would punish Kambili and Jaja for doing something wrong cause he believes he is beating the devil out of them. Kambili would probably have her grit score in the 2.0 scale because he thinks what is best for papa and mama and hopes for the best even though Jaja, mama, and herself are in an abusive household and doesn't do anything to change or go against them like Jaja.
I ended up scoring a 3.20 on the Grit scale. A person with “grit” is someone who is motivated to complete their goals efficiently and to the best of their ability without giving up. I learned that most people who are motivated are more likely to commit to their long term goals. Personally, I am not the type of person that thinks far into the future. I definitely do not pride myself in my ability to stay motivated, since I often lose interest in topics that I was once interested in. I believe that if I work towards gaining more of a growth mindset my grit will begin to increase. If I push myself to become more motivated in things that interest me, I will further be able to create future goals for myself and my career.
ReplyDeleteI think Jaja would have a very high Grit score (5). Jaja himself is extremely passionate and motivated to experience new things outside of the restrictions of his father. This is why we see him asking questions and exploring new things at Aunty Ifeoma’s house. The more he was exposed to that idea of freedom the more motivated he became to grasp that freedom and apply it to himself. Aunty Ifeoma would also have a high Grit score because of her ability to stand up for herself and speak about her opinions (4.80). Eugene would have a high Grit score as well due to his motivation to stand up for the people who look up to him (4-5). Finally, I think Kambili would score somewhere in the middle (2.5). Kambili does have grit, but it took her such a long time to stand up for herself because of the constant abuse from her father.
I scored a 2.70 on the grit test. I learned that I scored higher than about 20% of American adults in the U.S. I need to finish what I start. I need to finish tasks and have good time management. Learning this I could learn to complete tasks and stay focused until I complete it.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma = 4.4 because she shows a lot of resilience.
Jaja = 3.9 because of how he goes against Papa.
Papa Eugene = 4.9 is committed to his strict rules and he even sees the wrongs but still goes for it.
Kambili = 3.7 because she learns more about herself so this shows transformation.
I have come to understand that the majority of success is rooted in one's mindset rather than in innate talent or intelligence quotient. An individual who is determined to attain their goals, regardless of the obstacles encountered, is far more likely to succeed than someone who is easily discouraged. Through my exploration of GRIT, I intend to maintain this mindset and recognize that most objectives can be accomplished with dedication and perseverance. I will acknowledge that many individuals who have faced similar challenges have either succumbed to defeat or persevered despite setbacks. Ultimately, those who refuse to give up do not experience true failure, and I will continue to embrace this perspective when confronted with difficulties or feelings of stagnation.
ReplyDeleteCharacters score;
- Aunty Ifeoma would likely score around 4 to 5 on the grit scale due to her resilience, strong beliefs, and determination in overcoming challenges.
- Jaja would score similarly, influenced by Aunty Ifeoma. His time in Nsukka helped him develop independence, allowing him to stand up to his father and live for himself.
- Papa Eugene would score around a 4, as he is motivated and determined but remains content with his rigid way of life.
- Kambili would score between 4 and 5, as her experience with Aunty Ifeoma gave her a sense of freedom, pushing her to focus on her own desires and persevere through hardships.
I scored a 3.50 on the grit test.
ReplyDeleteI learned that people often succeed not just because they are intelligent but because they have passion for a goal and also have the perseverance to pursue it. This means that the motivation to achieve a goal doesn’t just come from making a smart decision to do what you have to do to achieve your goal but it mainly comes from being persistent and passionate about your goal and being willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. In other words you have to care so much about something to do it.
The following characters from purple hibiscus scores:
Aunty Ifeoma: She would most likely have the highest score from everyone else mentioned because she isn’t letting her brother (Papa) convince her to follow his ways for money even though she really needs it.
Jaja: He is most likely to score a lower to middle score because he is willing to fight for his own freedom but it would take him a long time to do it because he started to stand up for himself towards the end of the chapter.
Papa: He would score a little lower than Aunty Ifeoma because he does show great passion for his religion because it governs his life and this causes him to try to convince his other family members with money and never with his religion.
Kambili: she would score in the middle because her goal is to satisfy her father through the book, but that really isn’t a good goal. However a good goal that she did have was wanting to talk but it took her a long time.
My Grit score was 3.40 I scored higher more than about 40% of american adults I learned in the video and quiz that Grit is a passion a motivation to to sticking for something for long periods Its useful for everything in life I need to use it in school in my career to stay gritty I need to want that something it's not luck or talent it's how much you want it and how far your willing to go I need to stay motivated to finish things to finish school to pursue what I want and succeed and also people with a fixed mindset will not achieve the same level of growth as a growth mindset because people with their fixed mindset don’t allow their minds to take in those new ideas and perspectives like people with a growth mindset do it's why they achieve their goals better. I think Kambili would score like a 3.40 as well as me because for me its takes me time to face these new challenges like Kambili as well we can see in the book she struggles to accept who she is or the challenges around her I think Jaja would have a very high grit score because we see how he faces these challenges it doesn’t stop him he knows what he wants it's the freedom and I think aunty Ifeoma scores the same as well as Jaja she’s the one who changed him a lot when they stayed with her and lastly papa would be a high score as well he knows what he wants his family safe and filled with religion he wants them like him a perfect family.
ReplyDeleteMy score ended up being 4.00 which is 70% more than the average American. I’d say that’s pretty accurate because I always want to be better at things and don’t stop until I’m good. I think it helps me achieve my goals and makes me more positive.
ReplyDeleteFor the Purple Hibiscus characters I feel like they would all have a pretty high grit. In the political and economic state Nigeria was in at the time, they had to work hard to fight against it. This is how I would rank it from highest to lowest:
Jaja
Papa Eugene
Aunty Ifeoma
Kambili
I believe that Jaja would have the highest grit because he wasn’t afraid to fight against Papa’s oppressive control even if it meant he would get punished. He even took the blame for Mama and went to jail. He wasn’t about to let anything take his family down and he really showed that. Although Papa Eugene isn’t favorable I think he has a higher grit. No matter how much the government or his family fought against him, he stood his ground and fought for what he believed in, even though it wasn’t entirely true/ethical. He didn’t like punishing his kids or wife but since he believed it would serve God, which was his lifetime goal, he hurt them anyway. Aunty Ifeoma was a strong woman that wasn’t afraid of being free but I feel like she sort of gave up although she had no choice and stopped fighting for herself. I feel like her daughter, Amaka, would have more grit than her. And lastly is Kambili. She definitely gained more grit towards the end of the book with her newfound freedom but I feel like others fought for her more than she did. She’s a lot more stubborn and would probably allow people to get in the way of her goals. That’s my opinion though.
Score - 3.00 (higher than 20% of Americans)
ReplyDeleteThe grit test and the Ted talk video has helped me learn more about the grit and its factors. I learned that I am able to focus but sometimes won't be able to do one thing at a time. This shows what type of person I am and how to fix it. This helps by knowing when to be aware of me not focusing, being able to fix it and focus on what I need to do to be able to finish it. This will now help me in the future when I need to do tasks that I get distracted on.
Aunty Ifeoma - Aunty would for sure be around a 4 as she is a very determined woman.
Jaja - Jaja would also be around a 4 as he has gained his independence and has become a man.
Papa Eugene - Eugene would be around a 3 as he is very determined to control and takes control of everything.
Kambili - Kambili would be around a 3 as she has seen freedom and wants it but still holds back a little but knows she can have independence.
I scored a 3.30 on the grit test, which is 30 percent higher than most American adults. I learned that grit impacts an individual's ability to overcome obstacles. Someone with a lot of grit is likely to complete their goals rather than just give up. I would say I’m somewhere in the middle because although I have a lot of ambition, when it comes to difficult tasks, I stress out and I wanna give up, but I stay on task and try again.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma and Jaja would score around a 4 because they are very ambitious and have high standards for themselves. Papa Eugene would score a 3.9 because he has high standards for his family and religion. Kamblili would score a 3 because although she is influenced by Jaja and Aunty Ifeoma, she’s still under Papa's control.
I scored a 3.2 on the test. I realized that I can set goals and work towards them, but I can lose dedication after a long time, or when things get hard. I need to practice not giving up on goals after a long time.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma would score pretty high because she struggled with poverty, but she still stays happy and hopeful.
Jaja would score high, above a 4, because of the abuse he went through, and his ability to not let Papa put fear in him.
Papa would also score very high since he was a very stubborn character.
I believe Kambili would score very low because she never stands up for herself throughout the book; she is also very quiet and closed off.
I scored a 1.7 I learned that I need to work harder sometimes and finish what I start. I Need to make sure that my time management is better so I don't get as stressed when it comes to finishing tasks.
ReplyDeleteI think Aunty Ifeoma would score a 4.7 on the grit test, because she always makes sure to stand up for what is right and finshes what she starts (getting a visa, for example). I think Jaja would score a 4.2 because he stands up for himself but is inactive sometimes (such as when kambili was getting kicked). I think Kambili would score a low score, because she does not often stand up for herself or set strick goals. I think Papa Eugene would score very high because he stands up for what he believes (even if it is wrong).
I scored a 4.3 on the grit scale, I scored higher than 80% of most American adults. I have learned that because I do so well in school is because of my grit and motivation to do my best. I have learned that generations progressively become less and less gritty over time both through this blog post and through my own experiences. I am going to remember that my failures are not the end, that I am able to continue persevering through my challenges and also to reach my goals.
ReplyDeleteI think that Aunty Ifeoma would score a 4.6 on the grit scale because she works very hard to support her family and teach her children in an engaging way. She is also described as having a persona that knows where it is going and what it will do there. Jaja would score a 4.3 because he has learned what it is like to live with freedom in his life and what it is like to work towards it but before he was somewhat complacent and only tried to get good grades in school because Papa would be angry with him if he didn't. Papa Eugene would score a 2.8 because he had no interest in teaching his children and helping them progress to be their own people. And Kambili would score a 4.4 because she has very high hopes for her future and is willing to do the hard things to get her there.
I got a 3.30 on my grit test. I have learned that I need to be more passionate about things that I want to succeed in if I truly want to be successful. Being passionate makes you want to complete your goals. I will apply this to my life by overcoming challenges and working as hard as I can on my goals if I really want them to be achieved. Relating back to the book, I think Aunty Ifioma would have scored high because she was known to have passion for the people she loves and cares about and strived to be a role model for Kambili. For Jaja’s character, I definitely believe that Jaja embodies a lot of grit because of how much he strives to get out of his father's control and protect his family. Papa Eugene also embodied grit. He would have scored really high on the test. He strived to succeed and have control over his family. Kambili would have a decent score on the test as she had to really get in the mindset to get out of her father's control, which she struggled with at times.
ReplyDeleteGrit score : 2.60
ReplyDeleteI've learned that success is more about having a strong mindset. And those who push themselves through obstacles and stay committed, are more likely to to achieve their goals than those who give up easily. I will continue to develop grit and to remind myself that most things are only achievable with determination. Many people in these types of situations either give up or go despite setbacks. Keeping this in mind, I will stay open minded and positive even when things get frustrating or stuck.
Aunty Ifeoma - she would get a 4.6 because she's a independent and resilient person
Jaja - Jaja would get a 4.0 because of his defiance and wanting to pursue freedom
Papa Eugene - he would have a 5.0 because of how determined he is
Kambili - Kambili would score a 2 - 3, because although she does have grit she doesn't really push herself till the end
I scored a 4.0 on the grit test, I learned that the internet thinks I have a lot of grit or at least an average amount. This does not change much in my daily life because when I think something is worth it I already give it a hundred percent. I will continue to do so but this test was interesting.
ReplyDeleteA: I believe auntie Ifeoma would score the highest on the test because she has actually demonstrated her grit everyday in her living situation, I also think she would feel the test is pointless because it does not add anything useful to her time when she could be working.
B: Jaja in my opinion would score within the 4.0 area because he was always showing his grit when searching for freedom and being punished, he would do things with courage and no regret.
C: Papa Eugene would also score fairly high in my opinion this is because he was always pushing for his kids to be more and do more, though his motives were not necessarily morally correct in my opinion, he would persevere through quite a bit.
D: Kamibili she would have been on either end of the spectrum this is because it depends on what point we are viewing. If it comes to making Papa proud pre-death she would be very gritty doing what ever she can with as much effort as she has to make him proud.
I got a 3.30 and I have not realized a whole lot about myself but seeing that I'm 30 percent higher than the average adult in recent studies. but looking at the video and now knowing that grit means to have a passion of sticking to one thing and being successful in what you were accomplishing. It shows that when the task that you took on is hard to not give up and just keep pushing through cause at the end of it, it will all be worth it. I think kambili had a similar score as me because she was faced with challenges and she completed them and never quit no matter what, like for instance when her father abused her, she never quit
ReplyDeleteI scored a 4.0, or higher than 70% of tested high school students and I learned that this test is kind of stupid, it's impossible to get a scientifically accurate prediction of how someone reacts in various hardships in 10 short questions, and I'm going to apply it to my life by ignoring it, I know where I need to improve myself in my life and where my strengths lie at the moment.
ReplyDelete-I think Aunty Ifeoma would've gotten a perfect score because of her facing every adversity head on that has come her way, whether her husband is dead, her life is threatened, or she's on an entire different continent she knows who she is and what she needs to do.
-I think Jaja would've gotten a 4-4.5, he's had moments of weakness and giving up, especially whilst "awaiting trial" but that spark of rebellion never died.
-Papa Eugene is getting a very spiteful .5/5. Every moment of superficial "grit" he displayed the consequences have no way of falling on him, the second something occurs that threatens his goals he breaks and starts lashing out both verbally and physically
-Kambili starts out at a whopping 0/5, and I'd say after the time skip she's at around a 4-4.5/5, lots of hardships have befallen her but she has stayed strong and stood the tallest out of her entire family.
4. How do you think the following characters from Purple Hibiscus would have scored and why?
a. Aunty Ifeoma
b. Jaja
c. Papa Eugene
d. Kambili
I scored 2.70. I'm pretty aware that I tend to start projects and maybe finish them if I don't give up, so it's not new information to me. However when I do give up it does hurt, I tend to think about what I could've done better or dwell on what I didn't do. As far as what I plan to do with this information is to learn to be patient with tasks and problems in my life and really take my time with completing them and not letting them bog me down.
ReplyDeleteCharacters:
Aunty ifeoma: I would put her at around 4.5, she works very hard, and cares for her family and her brother’s family a lot. She fights back when there are wrongs and not afraid to use her voice and speak up
Jaja: 4.9-5, he's the most rebellious and the most willing to seek freedom among papa’s family. Hes brave and strong, and truly didn't give up at the face of papa
Papa: 4.8, he's always been determined to run his family the way he wants with whatever he needs to make it happen. however how he was getting bogged down by ade cokers death and that event affected the way he ran his household.
Kambili: a solid 4, she gradually becomes more determined towards the end with jaja's influence, but throughout the book she still falls to papas punishments and thoughts about what he would think of her actions.
I scored a 3.10 and apparently that is 30% higher than some American adults. I've learned that I should hold myself to certain goals, and to not let myself get distracted as easily. I can get higher fixated on a topic but then move to another, so a way to counter this is by giving myself incentive to complete said objective. And for the characters in Purple Hibiscus I would rank Aunty Ifeoma a solid 4.5 due to her unrelenting resolve to better the condition for her family and the students she presides over, For Jaja I'd rank him a solid 3.5 due to his high resolve however due to the rarity in actually acting he gets a 3.5, Papa Eugene gets a 5 due to his overwhelming efforts to controlling his family and managing his newspaper business, then finally Kambili at the begining of the book i'd give her a 2 but at the end she seems to gain a higher resolve s by the end I think she deserves a solid 3-3.2.
ReplyDeleteI learn that grit is the most important thing to have within this life. That with grit is mix of determination and focus on a goal to completions. I learn that I have a personal grit score of 3.80, this show that I have just above average of the population. This means that I more likely to stay with a task or goal longer than normal people.I will try to work on smaller goals to help me get to them. I feel that within the book of Purple Hibiscus I feel that Aunty Ifeoma and Jaja would had the highness grit score then the other characters(3-4). With there constantine strong blives and there unwillingness to give up on them. Eugene is also very gritty with how strong he holds on to his believes and act in line with them(4-5). Kambili was not that gritty with the fact she never reality never grow out of her fathers oppression and his opinion(2-3).
ReplyDeleteOn my grit test, I received a 2.1, and I do tend to forget or give up after a while because the goal appears so far away, and when this happens, I simply stop and give up; however, I do want to change that habit.
ReplyDeletea. Aunty Ifeoma
Aunty Ifeoma would get a 2 because she appears to be the type of person who will forget something and then be determined to finish it.
b. Jaja
I believe Jaja would get a 4.5 because he began to act differently around his father, tending to forget and possibly not care about it.
c. Papa Eugene
Papa Eugene would get a 5 because he does not appear to be the type of person who would stop if their goal was stopped; instead, he would do anything in his power to complete that goal or task, regardless of what happened.
d. Kambili
I believe Kambili would get a 5 because she appears to be very intelligent and does not give up no matter what Papa Eugene has forced her to accept and do because she has been trained to do things well regardless of the circumstances.
I got a 3.50 on my grit test I have learned that I have more grit than approximately 40% of individuals in the most recent study. I have learned that grit is a very important factor in the future of most people’s lives, and that grit helps to ensure a great future. I will start focusing more on my future, and what I do in the past to help myself going forward.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma would have a grit score of 4.5, I believe she has the most goals to look forward to in her future, especially with her moving to America and having to still help her children.
Jaja would score a 4.00 as he is still a child, he has to have many goals and things he wants to do with his life going forward, and he would probably want to focus on his own and his sister’s futures away from Papa.
Papa Eugene would not have much grit, being a low 2.0, Papa did have goals wanting his kids to stay Christians, making sure his kids followed his rules. But that was it Papa Eugene did not have many goals aside from church and family.
Kambili would score a little lower than Jaja being a 3.50 because she is not really the best at thinking for herself at least in the beginning, she was always listening to Papa and when she wasn't with Papa she listened to Aunty Ifeoma.
From the TED Talk, Angela Duckworth talked about grit. Grit means having determination and the ability to accomplish your goals. Duckworth talks about how grit is having passion to do long-term goals. She emphasizes how important it is to have a growing mindset and to have a strong grit. On the grit test, I scored 2.70 out of 5, 20% higher than most American adults.Getting this score means that I struggle with trying to keep long-term goals because I either get bored or distracted easily. I would agree with this because I do usually give up on different tasks or goals because I either lose interest in it or I give up because it was too hard for me to accomplish. Now that I know what grit is I do want to try and get better at accomplishing my goals rather than giving up.
ReplyDeletePURPLE HIBISCUS CHARACTERS:
Aunt Ifeoma: I feel like she would score a 5 because she was someone who had an open mind and she seemed very vocal about stuff that she either agreed or disagreed with. She also continued to work hard so that she could move her family to America.
Papa Eugene: I feel like Papa would score a 5 but not for a good reason. I feel like since he has the desire to accomplish God’s will this makes him do almost anything to have that satisfaction of success. This is why he is so abusive to his family and trying to make them perfect. He wants that satisfaction that what he is doing is good and is helping his family.
Kambili: I feel like from the beginning she would score a 5; not because she had the desire to accomplish her goals but because she was scared about the fact that Papa would be disappointed in her because she didn’t accomplish her goals. Then, as she grew as a person her score would vary from a 4-5 because now she started to do things that she wanted to do and doesn’t have so many expectations on herself to make her feel like if she doesn’t accomplish this task it will “ruin her.”
Jaja: I feel like in the beginning Jaja would have a 5 because of the same reason as kambili. He’s scared of disappointing Papa. But, I feel like once he grew more as a person and gained his freedom he probably went down to a 3-2. Not because he isn’t a very motivated person but because he doesn’t have high expectations for himself because Papa isn’t there anymore.
I scored a 2.9 on my grit test. Tha means that I have more grit than only 20% of Americans. So that means 80% of my peers are more determined and gritty than me. I learned that means that I give up and move on from things too quickly. I learned that I need to find ways to be more determined in my hopes and dreams. If I continue to give up easily, then I will never get anything done. So I need to persevere and grow. When I am feeling overwhelmed and want to give up, I need to breathe and figure out how to keep pushing myself until I am finished and proud of my work.
ReplyDeleteThe characters in Purple Hibiscus are interesting to look at on the grit scale. This is what I would score each one of them:
Aunty Ifeoma would get a solid 4.7-4.9 in my opinion. This is because she is very gritty in the book. A lot of things fly in her face and hit her, and yet she continues to push. She is a single mom raising good children in a culture that is against her.
I would give Jaja a 4-4.2. This is because he shows how determined and gritty he is. He has a lot going against him, and he also has a family to care for and protect, and he does all of it without giving up. He did have moments of weakness and less grit, but not often.
I think it looks like Papa would score high on the grit scale as he does a lot to control the family, but really, I would say he would score really low, like 2.5. This is because lashing out in bursts of violence in the name of control and growing religion is not grit, it’s abuse. He doesn’t get a lot of push back, and actually receives a lot of praise. But when he does get pushed back, he gets mad and lashes out, but he does give up eventually.
Kambili always had a lot of grit, it’s just that her grittiness shifted. She always did what was asked of her, no matter how much it would hurt her. Her determination to please Papa shows that she has a lot of grit. She would always push herself to be better for that goal. But eventually, her goals changed, and so then her grit changed too. She now was gritty about sticking with her new found morals and becoming free.
I scored a 3.4 out of 5, I can see it as I do work when I am supposed too but I rather find a an easier or better way to do something if its present to me, nonetheless I like work if I get something out of it.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma - 3.5
Jaja - 4
Papa Eugene- 5
Kambili - 2
Aunty Ifeoma because she shows the symbolism of freedom and helps Beatrice through her oppression. Jaja for his whole demeanor throughout the book and his resilience and rebelious actions against his father. Papa because he shows control and dominance and wants the best for his family. Kambili because she impressionable and very young
I scored a 5.0, I learned that when individuals are gifted with lots of talent, it does not help them or give them more perseverance, stamina, or grit. I will apply my grit to my life by never giving up and making sure that I try as hard as I possibly can in everything that I do. I think Aunty Ifeoma would have scored a 3.0 because although she withstood her university sending people to raid her house, she gave up on being a professor in Nigeria and moved to America. I think Jaja would have scored a 5.0 because he never gave up trying to get his freedom, no matter how much Papa Eugene would beat him. he still brought purple hibiscus home and still looked at the picture of Papa Nnukwu. I think Papa Eugene would score a 4.0 because he never gave up trying to expose the government with Ade Coker, and since he strived for perfection, he never gave up trying to make his family Christian. I think Kambili would have scored a 5.0 because she never gave up trying to get in touch with her tradition Nigerian roots; even when Papa hospitalized her, she went back to Nsukka

DeleteI scored a 2.5 on my gritty. I have learned that my success in life is all about focus and perseverance, and just just my natural talent, or IQ, I can get gritty when I really put my mind to things and overcome challenges and learn from challenges on the way. I think i will apply what i learned to my life by keeping a growth mindset in mind and really locking in on tasks and projects. As for the characters in Purple Hibiscus, I think Aunty Ifeoma would have gotten a 4.5-5 on the grit scale, my reasoning is that she is a widow and has worked extremely hard to keep her family happy and overcome every obstacle, whilst still enjoying the freedoms that God grants us. I think Jaja would get a 3.5 or 4 even because though he is in new environments in Nsukka, he would adapt and grow to every challenge he faced. By the end of the book, his self sacrifice was very honorable for his family, but the fact he was acting super weird at the end, brings his gritty to a 3.5. Papa Eugene is a very gritty person, he was a figure in the public eye, a business owner, and a stern father at the same time, his perseverance to make his country exactly how he though it should be is very gritty of him (although his actions were not agreeable), I give him a 5 on the gritty scale. Kambili was a character that changed drastically throughout the book, she faced many hardships and learned to live with them. Though she was a great student, she was very much a follower and an obedient daughter, showing resilience emotionally, but never tackled her true problems, as that is not how the Achike family does things. She would score a 1, but near the end of the book, i give her a 2, which still isn't horrible just average.
ReplyDeleteOn the test I scored an exact 4.00. I don’t know how I scored that. I was honest with my answers, and to be honest with myself, I don’t find me that gritty. I have always had trouble with motivation and giving up — that is, until I started my senior year. For whatever reason I am more motivated than I ever have been, and that has made me stronger in keeping interests and getting things done. I guess maybe I am a little gritty.
ReplyDeleteFrom the TED Talk I learned that grittiness is key to many things, success, survival even. The more grit and motivation you have the more likely you are to bounce back from failure and succeed. I find this idea comforting and I want to apply it to my life. I have always hated pity for failure and asking for help. I prefer to push myself through things. It’s true that I’ve been through many things that have ruined my capacity to be motivated and to get things done, but I won’t let that stop me anymore.
As for the characters in Purple Hibiscus, I would give Aunty Ifeoma a solid 5.00 on the grit scale. She’s been through so much, more than I could ever think of, and she still gets things done and finds a way through life’s toughest challenges. Jaja gets a 4.75. He’s not been through the same things as Aunty Ifeoma, sure, but he’s almost on her level. He used refusal and defiance to face off against Eugene despite the danger and he took the blame for his death so that he could see his mother walk free. Eugene gets a 2.00. I feel like, despite his authority and oppressive nature, he allows things to overcome him and his goals too much. He focuses too much on the personal lives of others and not himself. That’s not gritty. However, he has seen his fair share of religious trauma that influenced him to latch onto Catholicism and be how he was, and he still lived through it to his end, so that’s why he still has a score over 1.00. Kambili gets a 4.50. Like Jaja and Aunty Ifeoma, she’s seen more than enough, but still lived through it and became her own, stronger person because of it. She learned from others how to live effectively, freely, and legitimately and applied it.
On the grit test, I scored a 3. I agree with this score.
ReplyDeleteThis means the following:
.I likely have some resilience and coping mechanisms but may struggle with consistency and perseverance in challenging situations
.I might benefit from developing more effective coping strategies and learning to re-frame obstacles as opportunities for growth
.My score suggests I have moderate grit, but may need to work on building my confidence, self-motivation, and goal-setting skills.
I will apply this to my life by:
.Identifying areas where I'd like to improve my mindset and approach to different challenges
.Setting specific and achievable goals and develop a plan to tackle them
.Practicing re-framing challenges as opportunities for growth and learning
.Seek out supportive relationships and environments that encourage me to take risks and persevere
Grit scores for "Purple Hibiscus" characters:
Aunty Ifeoma: 5
She is a strong and independent character. She's the source of support and guidance for Kmabili and Jaja and her own life experiences have taught her to be courageous and determined.
Jaja: 4
He is a complex character who struggles with his own emotions and expectations that are placed upon him. However, I believe he shows remarkable resilience and he always gets back up and fights. Especially when standing up to Papa and finding his own path.
Papa: 1
Papa is very controlling and abusive. He uses his power to manipulate those around him. His actions are driven by a desire for control and dominance, rather than any sense of grit, guidance, or kindheartedness.
Kambili: I feel she would be a 2 if she took the test at the beginning of the book but would be a 4 by the end of it.
Kambili is shy and introverted at first and struggles to find her voice and assert herself. But as the novel progresses, she grows in confidence and strength, learning to speak out against injustice.
I scored a 2.29 on the grit test which is 10% higher than the average american. I’ve learned that this means I give up easily and I should start to follow through more on things that I want to do rather than give up when things get hard or I’m tired. I could apply this in life by doing my school work on time instead of doing it at the last minute and rushing, and by working on improving myself more like working out or eating better.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma- I feel that she would have scored around a 4.5-5 on the grit scale because not only was she working hard at the university and helping provide for her family with a job and as a mom, after her husband passed away she continued to be a great mom, working hard and kind to others
Jaja- I feel like Jaja would have scored around a 4 on the grit scale mainly because he wouldn’t show too much grit about rebelling against his father but he was able to endure the abuse for many years, and once he started realizing there was life with freedom he rebelled and also took the blame for Papa’s death to save his mom from jail
Papa Eugene- I think that Papa also scores high on the grit score around a 4.5 because he’s very dedicated to religion and his factories+ helping his community although he is kind of a horrible person to his family by abusing them or just completely ignoring their beliefs.
Kambili- I feel like originally Kambili had like no grit at all but by the end of the book I’d say she has around a 3.5 because she fought back against Papa and even got beaten almost to death just to defend the painting of Papa Nwuku.
I scored a 4.20 on the grit scale which I think fairly accurately represents me as a person. What I learned about today was that grit is the ability to persevere and work towards goals in the long term.this skill can help you overcome challenges and reach goals. I also specifically learned that that grit is separate from other things like intelligence or IQ and has no positive or negative correlation at all. I believe I already apply this to my everyday life, but the way that someone would apply this in their life is by working towards a goal that they have. The first step of doing this is to have a clear goal that you are passionate about: this could be a car or home. Then the real challenge begins. How are you going to reach this goal? Once that is determined you have to find a way to stick to this goal. Preferably this would be done solely by the motivation to get what you want.I think all of the characters would score pretty high, I would score aunty Ifeoma at a 4.8 as she was extremely perseverant throughout the story especially with taking care of her children throughout these hard times. I would give Jaja 4 as he is less so persevering and heading towards a goal by the end of the book but towards the start he wasn’t. I would say that papa is probably a 5 he was extremely dedicated to what he wanted, so much so that he would hurt his family just to reach his goal. And I would give Kambili a 3.8, I feel like through most of the book she does not have much grit but throughout her character arc she developes to have more grit.
ReplyDeleteI scored a 3.60 i learned that success is not determined on skill or how many times you don't fail at something or do it perfectly but it is more about failing and trying one more time and learning from the things you did wrong and avoiding them when you try again and it is something that can everyone apply in their life for me I often start creative projects and I feel like they are not good enough and I feel discouraged sometimes but I keep trying and I try and make new ones so I can learn from my mistakes
ReplyDeletea. Aunty Ifeoma- 4 she is very stubborn but I feel like she would leave and move on to other things
b. Jaja - 5 - Jaja is easily the most independent and he is the character that shows the most gritty
c. Papa Eugene -5 he is the most stubborn
d. Kambili -2 (at the start of the book ) but a 4.5 at the end where she is way more independent
In the grit test, I scored a 4. From watching the Ted Talk, I learned that grit plays a crucial role in people's lives. Most of those who succeed are the ones who develop grit over time. Those who face disappointments are often more likely to achieve their goals because many people, in their effort to avoid failure, give up on opportunities out of fear. Learning how to fail and persist despite obstacles is what builds grit. As the video mentioned, success isn’t determined by IQ, social class, or talent, “It’s grit that truly determines whether or not you make it.” Many talented individuals fail sometimes because they don’t put in the effort or persist when they face challenges. Instead, they give up, missing things they could have achieved if they would have been gritty. Personally, I’ve always tried to remain focused on my goals and never give up, even when tasks are difficult or take a long time. Sometimes, I tend to lose patience when progress feels slow, but I know it is important. That’s how I plan to apply what I’ve learned to my life, staying focused on my goals, remaining patient, and refusing to give up. In the end, grit is the most important factor in achieving success.
ReplyDeleteI believe Aunty Ifeoma would score high, as she consistently pursues her goals with determination. Jaja would also score high due to his willingness to defy Papa’s oppression and take risks to achieve freedom. Kambili would score somewhere in the middle since she shared a similar goal of freedom, but she was still influenced by her father. Papa, despite his problematic methods, would score high. He achieved many of his objectives, shaped his life according to his desires, and even controlled his family and manipulated others into believing in a different image of himself.
My grit score was a 4.50/5, which is higher than 90% of American adults who also took this study. What I have learned from this information is that grit is made up of determination and persistence. Being able to apply these principles to my everyday life has been very beneficial to me, as I get through school and pursue my hobbies. I believe that the characters Jaja, Papa, and Aunty Infeoma would score pretty high on the test due to the fact in the book they are not afraid to speak what's on their mind but on the other hand i believe that Kambili would score much lower because of her silence and being afraid to speak up
ReplyDeleteI scored a 3.1 on the grit scale which is a higher score than 20% of american adults. Grit is the will power to keep going to achieve long term goal and to never give up on your goals and things in life in general. I feel like I have so pretty good amount of grit i don't like to give up on things in life that I enjoy I try to always get better at them and I also strive to do great in life in general. I want to apply my grit to anything I do in my life whether if its a job, Side hustle , Hobby , Lifestyle I want to apply it to every aspect of my life because I feel like it just doing better for yourself and giving you a better mindset in life to become more successful. I feel like auntie would have a 4.0 level of grit just because she always strives for better and she doesn't settle in one spot and she doesn't let what other people think affect her life and her goals. Jaja I think would be a 3.0-3.5 because in some way he does let things hold him back from becoming what he wants and achieving his goals but he does come to his sense and tries to do what he wants with his life before anyone else does. I would give Papa a 5 even though Papa was a horrible person he had that grit to constantly achieve what he wanted in life and he would achieve those things any way he could. I would give Kambili and 2.5 I feel like she really didn't have grit at all in most of the story she would just let everyone choose her life for her and she wouldn't set goals for herself but she started getting better towards the end of the book
ReplyDeleteMy grit score was 3.9, which is considered to be higher then 50 percent of American Adults who took this test. How I will apply it to my everyday life is to continue and strive to be the best version of myself. To find better ways to handle my own issues and to grow as a person. I want to be able to apply these principles to my bad habits and problems so that I can learn from them and grow as a person not only for myself but others.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma: I think she would score pretty high on the test as she always strives to do what is best not only for herself but her family. That no matter the situation she might be in or her family, she will always try and find a way to get out of it and get better through it.
Jaja: I believe he would score very high on the test as he persevered through an abusive father someone who would put his feet into boiling hot water. He defied against that and broke free from his fathers grasp to grow as a person not only for himself, but his family. He sacrificed his freedom for his mother knowing he would go to jail because he took the blame for his fathers death.
Papa Eugene: Even though he hurt his family I believe that he would score fairly high on the test. The reasons for that are because he went directly against a corrupt government for the freedom of his country that even after one of his close friends were killed by them he still pushed endured and went to fight against them. He was right and from what we know he got to that point through a lot of hard work.
Kambili: She would not score super high but still be above average. She did not show much perseverance in the beginning as she would love her father even through and kind of just cope with what was happening. She did not have a lot of confidence in her words or her ability to talk to people. However, she did end up changing and developing a lot as a character towards the end.
On the GRIT test, I scored a 3.30. I learned that having grit is having a passion and a zeal for whatever subject you are interested in. It does not matter how good or bad you are in this subject, all that matters is that you will persevere through whatever trials or tribulations come. You are able to grow from the failure.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Aunty Ifeoma would have scored a higher score from maybe 4-5. This is because she is a free spirit and is not afraid of challenges. Jaja probably would have scored the same thing or around there because he is not afraid to stand up to Papa and put himself in the way of danger. Papa would have probably scored high too, I do not think he has low self esteem and when challenges come his way, he is able to get through it. Kambili would have scored a lower score because she is under the oppression of her father and does not really have a voice.
In the TED Talk, Angela Duckworth talked about grit. Grit means having determination and the ability to achieve your goals. Duckworth explained how grit is about having passion and perseverance to stick with long term goals showing the importance of having a growth mindset and to develop grit to succeed.
ReplyDeleteOn the grit test, I scored 4.59 out of 5 which is higher than about 95% of American adults. This shows that I’m really determined and able to focus on my goals even when things get tough. This makes sense because I have always been someone who keeps going no matter how hard things get. I motivate myself by believing in my future, reminding myself that I can do anything I put my mind to. Now that I know more about grit I want to keep using it to help me reach my goals and push through any challenges.
As for the characters in purple hibiscus I think:
Aunty Ifeoma would score a 5 because she’s hard working and determined, always staying positive even when life is hard and does everything she can to make a better life for her family. She also stands by what she believes in and doesn’t give up no matter what challenges come her way.
Papa Eugene would also score a 5 but not in a good way. His grit comes from strict, religious beliefs and his need to control his family. He’s determined to make everyone follow his rules, even if it means being abusive, his idea of success is harmful, but his determination to achieve it would still make his score high.
Kambili’s grit would probably be a 5 but it’s more out of fear of disappointing her father than from her own goals. Later in the story as she starts to grow and become more confident, I think her grit would still be a 4 or 5 but now it’s because she’s doing things for herself and working toward what she really wants.
Jaja would also start off with a 5 because of how much pressure he feels from his father. After he gains more freedom his grit score might drop to a 3 or 2. It’s not that he’s less motivated, but he’s no longer living under his father’s expectations and is learning to figure out his own path.
I got a 3.5 on the Grit Scale test, which is higher than 40% of Americans. This shows that I have some determination and passion for my goals, however I struggle to keep on track on them. I’ve learned that facing hard challenges is important and setbacks can help me grow. I easily lose focus and get distracted, but I always finish what I start. I do multiple projects at once just like playing different video games at the same time. I have trouble finishing one thing before starting another, however I finish whatever I started eventually.
ReplyDeleteIn Purple Hibiscus, Aunty Ifeoma would score around 4.8 to 5.0. She stays on task and always looks for a way to get things done, staying optimistic even when she is facing challenges. Jaja would get a 4.3 to 4.8 because he is strong and stands up for himself, even against his father’s rules. Even in prison he stays strong and never gives up. Papa Eugene would score around 4.5 to 5.0. He is determined and strict about his beliefs, however he works hard, runs a successful business, and earns respect. Kambili would have a grit score of around 3.0 to 3.5. She is quiet and struggles to stand up for herself at first but over time she becomes more confident.
I scored a 3.9 on the Grit test and that is more than 60% of Americans. I learned that compared to others I am very resilient and have a lot of “grit”. I will apply this to my life as I will continue to persevere through life challenges and stick to my goals. This will allow me to be the best version of myself and will allow me to grow as a person. It will also allow me to eliminate bad habits and lifestyle choices through hard work and dedication to being better.
ReplyDeleteI think Aunty Ifeoma would score very high on this test. She is shown throughout the story to be someone who is extremely resilient and does not back down from any sort of challenges that are thrown her way.
I think Jaja would also score fairly high however not as high as Aunty Ifepoma. This is because he is the one who chooses to go against Papa in the first place in the story when he refuses to listen to Papa. He escaped Papa’s control and helped his sister as well, he also took the fall for his mother which exemplifies his character even further.
I think Papa would score the highest on the grit test but for the wrong reasons. Throughout the story we see Papa is extremely stuck in his own ways and never makes an effort to bend or change his strict rules no matter what. It is also worth noting that he went against his own government despite the fear of assassination or kidnapping, he was very aware of what could’ve happened to him considering what happened to Ade Coker however he continued regardless.
I think Kambili would score around the average or maybe slightly above average. Throughout the entire story, Kambili is very submissive and quiet, never expressing her wants or needs, however after the events of The Pieces of Gods she changes and becomes much more strong-willed. We also saw this beginning to build with certain events such as the painting and more and more she built up her resilience. By the end of the novel, I would venture to say Kambili was much stronger than her previous self and much more willing to stand u[p for herself.
I got a score of 3.7 which is 50 percent higher than adults who have taken the test. I think this reflects me pretty well for the reason I have goals but I can sometimes lack the discipline to carry out small details of it. This test is a good reminder that I have to keep track of what I need to do to complete my goals.
ReplyDeleteFor the characters in Purple Hibiscus starting with Aunty Ifeoma, I think she would score a 4.7. I say this because she doesn’t allow anything to discourage her from completing her dream, for example when she had a problem with her school she kept pushing through. For Jaja I think he would score a 4.9 because of his desire and determination to be free, he won’t let anything or anyone stop him from achieving his freedom. For Papa Eugene I think he would score a 4.8 because of his high principles due to his following of his religious beliefs with it creating a pathway for him to follow. For Kambili I think she would score a 3.9, I say this because we don’t actually see her take real action to achieve her dreams of what she wants. Even though we do see her change throughout the book and have more courage, I don’t think she is on a higher level of grit yet.
I ended up scoring 2.90 on the Grit scale. I learned that how successful you will be in life doesn’t depend on your IQ or the events that have gone on in your life. It’s about having a strong mindset and pushing yourself to do better and not just giving up at the first sign of a problem. I learned how a person with a high IQ is not always set up to win because of that and that if they don't have any grit their IQ can get them nowhere because they will give up at the first bump in the road. I am going to apply it to my life by practicing not giving up when things get really hard and to just keep trying even if it takes a while.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma- 4, Aunty Ifeoma would have this score because even though her brother is very strict on his ways and she is watching his kids she makes sure to show the kids everything they want and how life could/should be like even though she knows her brother doesn’t want that. She doesn't let Papa push her around like he does with everyone else.
Jaja- 5, Jaja would have a high score because even though his family was always trying to make him follow the rules and go back into the bubble tey have set for him, he didn't go with it because he knew what he was aiming for was more important
Papa Eugene- 5, Papa Eugene would have a high score because he is very stubborn in his ways and always believes he is right no matter what he does or what people says he thinks his was is the only way and he doesn’t budge on that
Kambili-3, Kambili would score lower because she is a very shy quiet person who doesn’t like confrontation and is scared of making Papa Eugene angry so she just does what he says all of the time and it took her much longer to branch out and start to do what she wanted even if it was hard and people who held such a big place in her heart were against it.
On the Grit test I scored pretty low, I got a 2.10 which is 10% higher than Americans. I learned that I don't stay focused on things that go over a certain amount of time. I also learned that I need to learn to start finishing the things I start and work to reach my goals without giving up. A good way I can apply the things I've learned is to set certain goals that shouldn’t take too long and work hard on finishing those projects and then work up to long term projects. If it was Aunty Ifeoma on the test I think she would get a 5 because she has shown to be very strong, hard working and independent as well as very determined in the things she does. I think that Jaja would also get somewhere close to a 5, maybe around a 4.6-4.7 because although he has so much to deal with he has shown great strength and resilience throughout the novel. Although Papa is abusive and not a good person, he would probably get a high score as well, maybe somewhere around a 4.5 because he is stubborn and doesn’t give up on anything, he is also very obsessive over the topic of religion. Kambili would be somewhere in the middle at a 3 because she holds off a lot in the book and doesn’t ever really show herself as someone who will stick up for anything, even though we can see her change overtime in the novel she really doesn’t show any resilience or courage through anything.
ReplyDeleteI scored a 3.20 on the grit scale which is only greater than 30% of Americans. This is slightly surprising to me because although I have trouble staying focused on a goal, I always follow through on whatever work is needed to reach my goal. I've learned that having grit is a key determinant of if you are going to succeed or not. Only the truly strong can survive by continuing to persevere through struggles. I’m going to apply this to my life by trying to focus on one goal at a time rather than picking my favorite one and just focusing on that.
ReplyDeleteI think Aunty would get around a 4.5 because even through her husband’s death, she is still the same cheerful supportive mom.
I think that Jaja would score around a 4 because as soon as he got a taste of freedom, he made it his only goal to be free.
I think that Papa would score around a 4.3ish because when it came to the Standard, he was always on top of it and he was doing lots and lots of stuff for the community.
I think Kambili would score about a 3ish. She was quite easily distracted and all of her goals were fogged by the hatred of her father so she never reached them by herself.
On the grit test I scored a 3.00. I expected this score because yet sometimes certain tasks and ideas I think of I never feel pressure with but if there's a certain plan that I am fully set and confident on I will go through with it. The video taught me about perseverance and how you continue to stick with your plan thought out, never giving up on it. In the book I feel that Aunty Ifeoma would have had the highest grit score maybe around 4.9 - 5.0 she should throughout the book that she was demanding never to give up never stopped because of someone or something thigh everytime she never let it go. Jaja would source close under her 4.6 -4.8 with every challenge he faced he pushed through he always knew what he wanted to stand up from himself he let no one tear him down he perceived through papas actions. Papa would be scored 3.6 - 4.0 papa was yet dedicated and passionate with his religion but he never should progress with finding himself and his family he was stubborn and never thought of others around him. Throughout Kambili's character development from the start of the book to the end I would say her score changed the most because she perceived and found her voice figured out who she was.
ReplyDeletePerseverance and Passion
ReplyDeleteI scored a 4.00 on the Grit test which felt like it made sense to me because I always say that my
education is everything to me because it is epically how hard I work to maintain my grades at A
and B to get a good GPA for college and yes those grades have helped me but that was just one
of my small goals compared to my main goal to become a neurosurgeon. Although becoming a
neurosurgeon is my main goal, it doesn't mean I don't have many more and will have many more
because I consistently trying to push myself to meet my goals. This reminded me of the TED talk
by Angela Lee Duckworth where she stated a child that shows Grit is more passionate and has
perseverance in their lives. I agreed with this because I like to think of myself as what Angela
Lee Duckworth described as a child who is passionate about a task enough that when an incident
happens in their plan they perseverent to continue to meet their goal; Angela also stated that you
see those students that have a spark in their eye when they fail to continue to go and I feel like
that all the time because all of my failures have lead me to work even harder to gain the
knowledge I have today.
Aunty Ifeoma would score at 3.45 since she is so persistent in getting her education, not having a
husband, and the ability to go make a new life for her and her family in the United States but the
reason why I didn't put her higher is that she has obligations which occupied her time.
Jaja would have scored 3.00 since he was very passionate about rebelling to gain freedom from
his father by telling Papa to give him his key for his room to even taking Kevin to drive Kambili
and him to Nnuska without thinking about how Papa would get to church. I did give him a low
score for not helping his mother or sister with the abuse.
Papa Eugene would score a 5.99 because of his passion for leading his children to greatness to
display a perfect image and persevering to try to find new ways for his children to be obedient
and controlled by him and God.
Kambili would score 2.56 since it took Kmabili a while to rebel or even think about rebelling
against Papa but it also scored her higher because she was so passionate about having a sense of
freedom that she got beaten almost to death to have it.
What I learned was Angela defines grit as a combination of passion and perseverance toward long term goals. One thing I really liked about her message was how grit can be developed and applied to all areas of life and not just one. It's not just about talent or intelligence but how grit allows those to push through challenges and so on that would lead to success. The way I plan to apply grit to my own life is to push through setbacks such as when I face challenges, instead of giving up I'll be sure to work through the difficulties with patience and so on and another way I'm going to apply it is by maintaining a passion for long term goals because sometimes interest is lost when results aren't seen as quick as we expect yet I'll be sure to be focused on the bigger picture even if i struggle to do so. I Aunty would have scored high due to the fact that she's independent as well as resilient and how committed she is to her goals and so on. I think Jaja would have scored some what high just not as high as Aunty because although he shows determination his grit is still being developed within experience. I think Papa would have scored low due to how closed minded he is.. enough said. I think Kambili also would have scored low due to how easily influenced she was when it came to Papa but sure towards the end her grit would be higher due to perseverance and etc but grit can be applied to so many areas of life and it's interesting to see how it was applied in Purple Hibiscus.
ReplyDeleteOn my grit test I scored a 3.0, my score was 20% higher than most Americans. I have learned that with the grit test, it measures passion and motivation for long-term goals. This test is to help achieve long term success where motivation and perseverance are needed. The grit test helps in different areas where people face challenges but keep going despite the obstacles.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma- I think she would get a 3.5 score because she is very strong-willed and dedicated to creating safe environments with all of her children.
Jaja- I think Jaja would have the highest score because he shows the most character development and growth, he fought back for his freedom and sacrificed for his family.
Papa- I think papa is gritty but not in the right way, he sticks to harsh beliefs and routines, causing a bad environment for his family.
Kambili- I would rate Kambili as a 2 for the beginning of the book because of how obedient she was, but as her character developed in the boo,k I believe her score went up higher when she found her voice and inner self.
For my grit test I scored 3.10 making my score higher than 30% of American adults.
ReplyDeleteTaking this test made me realize that I have perseverance in some areas,, I’m still struggling with long-term perseverance in others. Grit isn’t just about working hard but staying committed to your goals.
Ways I could apply it:
Setting long-term goals and breaking them into smaller, manageable steps.
Practicing resilience by pushing through challenges instead of giving up too soon.
Surrounding myself with gritty people who inspire persistence.
Aunty ifeoma would have scored 4.5 to 5. Despite financial struggles and political oppression, she remains passionate about education and independence. She persistently encourages Kambili and Jaja to think for themselves, and she does not back down from challenges.
Jaja would have scored 3.5 to 4. Jaja’s grit grows throughout the novel. At first, he passively follows his father’s strict rules, but over time, he develops the strength to rebel and protect his family. His final act of taking the blame for his mother’s crime shows perseverance
Papa would have scored a solid 4 in my opinion, Eugene is very determined and disciplined, but his grit is misdirected. His passion for religion and success is intense, but his inability to tolerate different viewpoints leads to cruelty.
Kambili would have been the lowest scoring a 2.5 to a 3 She is fearful and submissive under Papa’s control. However, as she spends time with Aunty Ifeoma, she starts to develop resilience. By the end of the novel, she shows more courage, indicating that her grit is growing.
I scored a 2.70 on the grit test. I learned that I scored higher than about 20% of American adults in the U.S. I need to finish what I start. I need to finish tasks and have good time management. Learning this I could learn to complete tasks and stay focused until I complete it.
ReplyDeleteAunty Ifeoma = 4.4 because she shows a lot of resilience
Jaja =3.9 because of how he goes against Papa
Papa Eugene 4.9 is committed to his strict rules and he even sees the wrongs but still goes for it.
Kambili = 3.7 because she learns more about herself so this shows transformation.
On the grit test, I scored 3.10 making me 30% above the average.
ReplyDeleteWhat I learned from the video is that itś all about perseverance and passion for long-term goals. It's not just talent or intelligence that leads to success, but staying committed and pushing through challenges. It is about not giving up when things get tough.
How I would apply what I have learned is to start by setting myself long-term and short-term goals. I will break down my long-term goals into smaller steps so I can track my progress more efficiently. Instead of feeling defeated or feeling like I've failed, I will now view these as opportunities to grow and learn.
How I think Aunty Ifeoma would score on the grit test would be very high. Throughout Purple Hibiscus she demonstrated perseverance and passion for her goals, even when faced with tough challenges. She is dedicated to her goals and providing a great future for her children.
Jaja would most likely score high on the grit test. Although at the beginning of Purple Hibiscus, he appears more quiet and passive under Papa´ś abuse and strict rules. But as the story progresses he then learns of his voice, becoming more resilient, and begins to defy Papa.
He shows immense strength when taking the blame for Mama, recognizing his sacrifice and emotional strength as well.
Papa Eugene´s grit test results would be complex. He would score high in perseverance but low for setting long-term personal goals. He was determined in his beliefs and religion and was willing to set strict rules for his family even if it meant sacrificing his family´s well-being.
I believe Kambili would have a low grit score but it can change over time. At the beginning of Purple Hibiscus, she is afraid and obedient of her father´s strict rules. She lacks the confidence to think and act independently. But towards the end she begins to find her own voice, and learns of her independence and freedom.
I got a 3.30 and I have not realized a whole lot about myself but seeing that I'm 30 percent higher than the average adult in recent studies. but looking at the video and now knowing that grit means to have a passion of sticking to one thing and being successful in what you were accomplishing. It shows that when the task that you took on is hard to not give up and just keep pushing through cause at the end of it, it will all be worth it.i think it would apply to my life because it will keep me motivated to stay with the hard task I face in life and to never give up. I think kambili had a similar score as me because she was faced with challenges and she completed them and never quit no matter what, like for instance when her father abused her, she never quit. I think jaja would have scored a 4.00 because he is not afraid of new challenges and risks, papa would have scored 4.80 because he persevere a lot and once he has his mind set on something he sticks with it. Aunty ifeoma is high like papa because she is very free spirited and determined.
ReplyDeleteI scored a 3.7 on my grit test which is 50% of all Americans. This tells me that once I set goals I like to finish them no matter if it is the most difficult thing for me. I learned through this that I can always have more grit because I do lose interest in topics pretty fast. I also learned how important it is to have grit, its the drive and passion to overcome goals which supports in success.
ReplyDeletea. Aunty Ifeoma: I think Aunty Ifeoma would have around a 3.5-4.0 grit level though she is very carefree when she sets her mind to something she goes through with it such as when she raised her kids without a husband, became a professor at a university, and got her visa to go to America.
b. Jaja: Jaja would have 3.5 in grit for the reason that his study habit must be really high if he was the top in his class
c. Papa Eugene: Papa Eugene would definitely have a 4 and above for the reason hes very set on his goals with his children to the point where he thinks abuse is okay
d. Kambili: Kambilis grit would be around a 2.5 shes still very young and I feel her mind is still very curious about everything around her, therefore she doesnt really stay on one subject.
I got a 4.00 on the grit test, meaning I’m 70% more grittier than others. While watching the video and taking this test, I’ve learned that having grit means being driven to do something or follow a goal for a long period, having that learner mindset, and committing to goals like a marathon run and not a sprint. I would use grit to follow and achieve specific goals in my life, or in my career overall just so that I can achieve them. Out of the characters listed from The Purple Hibiscus, I think if they were to take the test they would range from 3.50-5.00. This is because I think they all have something to go for, like a goal, and I feel like we can see these characters fight for this and achieve it. Like how Jaja and Kambili are fighting to reach true freedom from their father and religion. for a while but is sure that it eventually happened as he starts speaking up for himself, going against his fathers rules.
